An Exposition of English Insects. Including the several Classes of Neuropetra, Hymenoptera & Diptera or Bees, Flies & Libellulae. Exhibiting on 51 copper plates near 500 figures accurately drawn & highly finished in colours, from nature…… Moses Harris. Sold by Mr. White, bookseller, in High Street, & Mr. Robson, in New Bond Street. London, White & Robson, 1782. Moses Harris' lavishly illustrated entomological work was first published in issues between 1776 and 1780. All 500 figures of insects were drawn, engraved and finely coloured by hand by the entomologist and engraver himself. Harris was one of the most outstanding entomologists of the time and the "first to draw attention to the importance of wing neuration in the classification of lepidoptera and upon this principle he arranged the species in his published works, illustrating them in colour with a high degree of accuracy" (Lisney, S. 156f.). The often lacking Scheme of Colours was first published as 'prismatic' circle in The Natural System of Colours (1766). At the centre of his circle, Harris "demonstrates what we nowadays know as the subtractive mixing of colours, with his most important observation showing that black will be formed through the superimposition of the three basic-colours: red, yellow and blue" (W. Spillmann). Modern half leather with marbled boards.
