Veteris et Modernae Urbis Romae, ichnographia et accurate designatio, cura et sumtibus Matthaei Seutteri. S.C.M. Geogr. Augustani. Truly stunning map of Rome with a decorative black/white cartouche, views of the Seven Churches, description and devices of the (then) 14 districts, as defined by Benedictus IV in 1743. The districts were to have an even distribution of population. Seutter’s bird’s-eye plan is very detailed; the major landmarks and individual streets are recognisable and it is easy to tell which parts of the ancient city were centres of population again and which parts were still under the plough. In the bottom right corner an inset map titled : Die 7 Berge de Alten Statt Rom [=the seven mountains of the ancient city of Rome.
