Two attractive views of the Hungarian city of Esztergom or Gran, known in Roman times as Strigonium. Esztergom is a small city in northern Hungary, about 50 km north-west of the capital Budapest. It lies on the right bank of the river Danube, which forms the border with Slovakia there. Esztergom was the capital of Hungary from the 10th till the mid-13th century and it was the Royal Seat until King Bela IV moved to it Visegrad and later to Buda. The top view shows the city and surroundings prior to its sacking and occupation by the Turks and the bottom view shows region after the occupation. Three mounted soldiers jousting in the foreground. From : Civitates Orbis Terrarum. Verso Latin [57]
